To intitate our commemorations of World War I there will be a short service of remembrance at St Michael’s Church, East Peckham, Kent  at 11am on the  100th anniverary of the declaration of war. The choice of this location is because here is where John Norwood is commemorated. Norwood was the first Exonian to be killed in action, at Petit Morin in the Battle of the Marne, on 8th September 1914, his 38th birthday. His gallantry had been recognised when he was awared the Victoria Cross at the battle of Ladysmith in the Boer War.
